DHS Forensic Handbook
The forensic system is where behavioral health care and the courts meet. It serves people with mental health needs or intellectual disabilities that may affect their ability to take part in a trial or safely return to their community after trial.
The IDHS Forensic Handbook provides an overview of the forensic system, the people involved, and how they work together. The scope of forensic treatment services is mandated by statute. Navigating the requirements and processes can be daunting. The goal of this handbook is to provide orientation information and practical direction to interested parties about forensic treatment services in Illinois.
