Illinois EPA grants Exelon Generation Company, LLC. Provisional Variance from Discharge Requirements
Illinois EPA grants Exelon Generation Company, LLC. Provisional Variance from Discharge Requirements
Springfield—The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) has granted Exelon Generation Company, LLC a provisional variance for its Dresden Nuclear Station from its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) water discharge permit limits so that Dresden Station can repair one of the lift station pumps. Exelon Generation requested the provisional variance after one of the lift station pumps failed.
Dresden Station's NPDES permit requires a specified mode of operation for cooling water discharges for summer months and for winter months. During the requested provisional variance period, the facility will be operating in summer month mode. Dresden Station is installing multiple temporary lift pumps to supplement the operating lift pumps during this time.
Dresden Station is located at the confluence of the Des Plaines and Kankakee Rivers near Morris, Illinois, at River Mile 272.3.
The IEPA has determined that the environmental impact from the variance would be minimal, no reasonable alternative appears to be available, no public water supplies will be affected, no federal regulations would prohibit granting the request, and the facility would face an arbitrary and unreasonable hardship if the IEPA did not grant the requested variance.
Any environmental impact from the requested relief will be closely monitored, and the Agency must be immediately notified of any adverse impacts.
The provisional variance ends no later than February 26, 2011. All other NPDES permit requirements will remain in effect.
