Illinois EPA to Clean up Two Open Dump Sites in Fulton County

Press Release - Thursday, July 01, 2010

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has begun clean up of the first of two open dump sites in Cass Township, Fulton County.  Both cleanups will be completed by the beginning of July, weather permitting.

The Illinois EPA will clean up a total of approximately 50 cubic yards of used and waste tires, white goods, furniture, metal debris, and general household refuse from Cass township rights-of-way

The first cleanup site is located nearly two miles west of Cuba along North Grant Keime Road.  The second cleanup site, which will commence as soon as the first one is completed, is located nearly three miles northwest of Cuba on East Cameron Road.

Along with the approximately 50 cubic yards of various types of waste, several used tires were among the dumped items. While all illegally dumped waste presents environmental and safety concerns, improperly disposed tires provide a breeding habitat for the type of mosquito that is the primary carrier of the West Nile Virus.

The Illinois EPA has cleaned up over 270 long-festering open dumps all over the state since the fall of 2006.  Since 2006, almost 760 tons of tires and nearly 1,140 tons of metal have been recycled from the cleanups and nearly 41,500 tons of other debris have been taken to regulated landfills for proper disposal.
