Governor Pat Quinn hosts open house at the Executive Mansion on the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth
SPRINGFIELD -February 12, 2009. On Thursday, Governor Pat Quinn hosted an open house at the Executive Mansion, 410 East Jackson Street, to welcome the people of Illinois into their house on the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln's birth.
"The Executive Mansion belongs to the people of Illinois," Quinn said. "There is no better day to open up this beautiful house to the people than the day marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of our state's greatest resident, Abraham Lincoln."
The Executive Mansion has served as the official residence of Illinois governors and their families since it was completed in 1855. Joel Matteson was the first governor to move into the Georgian style mansion. Seven presidents, including Lincoln, have been received in the 16 room manor.
The mansion is one of the oldest historic residences in Illinois, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
