Libertyville property listed in National Register of Historic Places
LIBERTYVILLE - The Libertyville High School Brainerd Building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on July 16, 2008 by the National Park Service.
"The Brainerd Building provided access to quality education for students throughout central Lake County for many decades and is still fondly remembered by many former students and teachers," said Jan Grimes, director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, which administers the National Register program in Illinois. "We welcome its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, the nation's most prestigious listing of properties with historical significance."
When it opened in 1917, Libertyville High School's Brainerd Building provided Lake County with one of its first four-year high school buildings. The education program at Brainerd was continually enhanced as major building additions expanded space for the growing student population. So much educational progress was made at Brainerd that Libertyville High School's educational model of circa 1930 is essentially unchanged today. With the opening of a new and larger high school building in 1954, Brainerd became a freshman attendance center. Its last academic use occurred in 1999, and in 2007 the building was leased to the Village of Libertyville, which has in turn leased the building for use as a community center.
