Rolling on the river
PETERSBURG - The popular guided canoe tours return this summer to Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site.
Lincoln's New Salem will offer guided canoe trips on the Sangamon River on July 12, 19, and 26. New Salem naturalists Ashley Phillips and Kristen Bess will provide participants with information about the natural and cultural heritage associated with the river. The trip will cover about nine miles and last four to five hours. Canoes will not be provided, although information about canoe rental sites can be provided when you call to register. The trips, which are free and open to the public, are limited to the first 20 people to sign up. Advance reservations, which are required, may be made by calling Ashley or Kristen at (217) 632-4000.
Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (www.Illinois-History.gov), is located along Route 97 about two miles south of Petersburg and 20 miles northwest of Springfield. It is open daily for free public tours.
