Marion's Latta Java receives new façade design from Illinois Main Street architects

Press Release - Tuesday, July 08, 2008

MARION - A new façade design for Latta Java at 412 N. Market Street has been delivered to owners Terance Henry and Kathy Gulledge by the Illinois Main Street architects who met with them during a March 5 visit to Marion.

The new façade design was developed by Darius Bryjka for Latta Java and features improved signage, awning and a new paint scheme as well as the repair of historic elements such as the doors, windows, and prism glass transoms, which were discovered during the site visit and assessed to be in very good condition. Latta Java, located on the site of an old meat market, specializes in coffee, chicken and tuna salads, and quiche. The new owners have plans to further rehab the 1915 building, which sat vacant for a number of years prior to Latta Java's opening.

Because Marion is one of nearly 70 Illinois Main Street cities, these façade and logo designs are available at no charge to businesses in the downtown district. The estimated market value for each design is $2,400. Renovation projects in this area may also qualify for an investment tax credit for historic buildings and/or a disabled access tax credit - owners are urged to contact the Marion Main Street office at (618) 993-5299 for details.

Illinois Main Street is a joint program of the Office of Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. Designated Main Street communities, such as Marion, receive a variety of free architectural services from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, including design assistance and advice on maintenance, code issues, and technical and product information.
