First Lady Patricia Blagojevich announces the June selection for Children's Reading Club: Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Press Release - Tuesday, June 03, 2008

CHICAGO - First Lady Patricia Blagojevich today announced the June selection for her Children's Reading Club, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Mrs. Blagojevich began the Children's Reading Club to encourage parents to read with their children.  The club is a recommended reading list made up of books the First Lady and her daughters enjoy at home. The Children's Reading Club specifically targets children between the ages of seven and twelve but takes into consideration children of all ages.
The First Lady's book selection for June, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, for children through age eight, tells the story of a young boy named Max who is sent to bed without supper for his mischievous behavior. Max's bedroom grows into a wild forest and he dreams of sailing away to an imaginary land filled with "Wild Things." The young boy finds adventure in this fairy tale and eventually becomes king over the enchanted land.
"Where the Wild Things Are is a wonderful read for young minds and an incredible exploration into the vivid imagination of a child," said the First Lady. "This is the kind of book that encourages children to embrace their childhood fantasies and appreciate the creativity of a fairy tale. It is truly a book that makes children love to read."
Maurice Sendak, writer and illustrator of the Children's Reading Club selection for June, is a renowned children's book author, having won numerous awards including the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, the National Medal of Arts, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award and the Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are. His other publications include Pleasant Fieldmouse, The Bee-man of Orn and Very Far Away.
The First Lady launched the Children's Reading Club literacy initiative in March of 2005, and has selected books such as Charlotte's Web, Harriet the Spy, The Growing-up Feet, Henry Huggins and Number the Stars for the recommended list.   Each month's book selection is featured on the First Lady's website at http://www.illinois.gov/firstlady.  The First Lady hopes the recommended list will enable parents to find books the whole family can enjoy.
