Illinois EPA reminds Illinoisans to participate in the Partners for Waste Paint Solutions Program
SPRINGFIELD - As spring pushes on and summer approaches, many Illinoisans will be making the trip to the home improvement store and rolling on a new coat of paint in their home. Before the last wall has been primed and painted, Illinois Environmental Protection (Illinois EPA) Director Doug Scott would like to remind homeowners about options for the leftover paint.
The Agency's Partners for Waste Paint Solutions Program offers a solution for properly managing unwanted or unused paint products.
"About 25 percent of the waste collected during the Illinois EPA's one-day collections is paint," said Director Scott.
"This Waste Paint Solutions Program is a good solution for Illinois homeowners because it gives them the opportunity to dispose that gallon of paint they have no use for, and it keeps the material from the waste stream; it also allows much of the material to be used for its intended purpose."
The Illinois EPA works with paint retailers and other partners to find uses for waste paint from consumers. The program allows citizens to the opportunity to return usable or unusable paint products to the point of sale, or other location, for reformulation or disposal. The Illinois EPA arranges for transportation and disposal.
The Partners for Waste Paint Solutions Program is a voluntary, cooperative agreement between the Illinois EPA and paint retailers to help address the large volume unwanted paint delivered by Illinois citizens to every collection, in every part of the state. The paint collected has been used for anti-graffiti programs, various community service organizations, churches, non-profit organizations, and even shipped overseas for use in Haiti.
Launched in August 1995 with three paint retailers in Springfield, the Partners for Waste Paint Solutions Program is part of the Illinois EPA's Household Hazardous Waste collection program.
Due to varying collection times and policies of each partner, the Agency recommends homeowners phone ahead for particulars at each location. For more information on the program, including a list of partners, please visit http://www.epa.state.il.us/land/citizen-involvement/paint.html.
