Lake Bluff's William McCormick Blair Estate listed in National Register of Historic Places

Press Release - Sunday, March 16, 2008

LAKE BLUFF - The William McCormick Blair Estate at 982 Sheridan Road in Lake Bluff was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on January 31 by the National Park Service.

"The Blair Estate was placed in the National Register because of its association with famed architect David Adler and its wonderful Colonial Revival architecture," said Jennifer Tirey, acting director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, which administers the National Register program in Illinois. "This is a prestigious recognition for Lake Bluff."

Mr. and Mrs. William McCormick Blair built their Lake Bluff estate in 1926 - 1928. It was designed by David Adler, who is widely recognized as the Chicago area's pre-eminent country house architect of his generation. Its distinctive, asymmetrical style differs from other Colonial Revival structures that are typically symmetrical. The estate buildings display a high level of artistry, a keen sensitivity to materials, and superb craftsmanship. The estate grounds, designed by noteworthy landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman, complement the Adler-designed buildings
