Veterans' Affairs Director Tammy Duckworth reminds residents of easy way to assist state's military heroes

Press Release - Thursday, February 21, 2008

CHICAGO - As a new tax season is underway and taxpayers begin to fill out their IL-1040 tax forms, Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs (IDVA) Director L. Tammy Duckworth is reminding residents about an easy way to help the state's military heroes.  Step 10 on IL-1040 tax forms allows residents to write-in any amount they wish to donate to the Illinois Veterans' Homes.

"Illinois taxpayers can help out the state's Veterans by making a donation from a portion of their 2007 income tax refund.  This is a simple, effortless way that Illinoisans can support their state's service members and say thank you for all that they have done.  I want to encourage everyone, when completing their 2007 income tax return form, to not skip over Step 10 - make a contribution to the Illinois Veterans' Home fund.  Every little bit helps," IDVA Director Tammy Duckworth said.

The state added the Illinois Veterans' Home fund to its list of voluntary contribution funds in 2004.  The money raised is used to purchase much needed supplies and equipment to enhance the lives of the nearly 1,000 residents of the state's four Veterans' homes located in Anna, LaSalle, Manteno and Quincy.  Last year, Illinois residents generously donated more than $113,360 to the fund.

"We need all the help we can get as we care for those who put their lives on the line for our freedoms.  Our Veterans have served this country honorably and bravely.  Now, it's our time to serve them.  So I urge you to please, make a donation from a portion of your 2007 income tax refund and help support our Veterans," Director Duckworth added.
