Learn New Crafts and Skills
LERNA - The public is invited to participate in the Winter Workshop series at Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site near Charleston. All workshops have been designed for beginners, and participants should bring a sack lunch. Reservations may be made by contacting Lincoln Log Cabin at (217) 345-1845, and all payments should be made to the Volunteer Pioneers, P.O. Box 100, Lerna, IL 62440.
Introduction to weaving
February 12 - 16, 9 a.m. - 4p.m. daily
This workshop is the perfect opportunity for those who have no previous weaving experience. This five day course will introduce you to the basics of weaving. Participants will have the opportunity to warp one of the looms as a class, and weave on a variety of pre-warped looms. All materials are provided. Cost: $200.00.
Day caps
February 23 and March 1, 10a.m. - 4 p.m.
Students will be provided hands on instruction on making their own authentically reproduced day cap. Please bring needles, thread, and scissors, all other materials will be provided. Handouts included. Cost: $10.00
Knitting
March 8 or 29, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Learn the basics of knitting, or brush up on your techniques in this class. From two basic stitches, the knit and purl, any number of projects can be completed and showcased by color and patterns. Cost: $5.00
Mountain Dulcimer
March 15, 9 a.m. - noon for beginners
1 - 4 p.m. for intermediate
The morning session is for beginners, no experience required, and will focus on basic playing techniques. The afternoon the class will be tailored for intermediate students. Please bring a 3 or 4-string mountain dulcimer. Cost: $50.00
Shaker Boxes
April 26 - 27, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday
11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday
Learn to make traditional shaker boxes in this two day class. Students will have the opportunity to make a set of three shaker boxes, sized 3, 4, and 5 in cherry wood. Additionally, they will make a number 7 divided carrier in maple. Students should bring an x-acto knife; all other materials will be provided. Cost: $95.00
Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (www.Illinois-History.gov), is the last home of Thomas and Sarah Bush Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's father and stepmother.
