Algonquin's Geister House listed in National Register of Historic Places

ALGONQUIN - The Christian Geister House at 302 S. Main Street in Algonquin has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service.

"The Geister House was placed in the National Register because of its wonderful Queen Anne architecture, still marvelously intact after more than a century," said Robert Coomer, director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, which administers the National Register program in Illinois. "This is a prestigious recognition for Algonquin."

"Since the inception of the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, thousands of Illinois' historic and prehistoric places have been designated as important historical resources worthy of preservation. The Geister House is more than deserving of this honor," said Senator Pamela J. Althoff (R-Crystal Lake). "This designation brings attention to the important historical significance of the Geister House and maintains the living history of the site and the community. This is a tremendous honor for the Geister House, the Village of Algonquin and McHenry County."

"I want to congratulate the Geister House and all who have helped to preserve its historic beauty on such a deserving honor. Its historic architecture and décor brings old-fashion charm to downtown Algonquin," said Rep. Michael Tryon (R-Crystal Lake).

Local carpenter Amos Wilburn began construction on a family residence for Christian Geister in 1893. Mr. Geister was one of the town's grist mill operators and the village treasurer. The home was purchased by Emma Heager Estergren in 1909 and she lived there until her death in the 1970s. Besides its connection to the period of Algonquin's early growth, the Geister House features many classic ornate, asymmetrical Queen Anne architectural style features such as spindlework and turrets.
