A walk on the wild side

Press Release - Sunday, June 24, 2007

PETERSBURG  - History isn't the only thing visitors can enjoy this summer at Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site.  Guided nature walks that begin at the reconstructed 1830s log village are being beginning this week.

Guided nature walks along Mentor Graham Trail leave from the Visitor Center at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday - Friday beginning this week.  Naturalist interns from Illinois College in Jacksonville conduct the three-quarter-mile, 45-minute walks, discussing fun facts about numerous plants, including those native to the area as well as those that have been introduced.  The walks are free and open to the public, and no reservations are required.

Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (www.Illinois-History.gov), is located along Route 97 about two miles south of Petersburg and 20 miles northwest of Springfield.  It is open daily for free public tours.
