Lincoln's Hoblit House listed in National Register of Historic Places

Press Release - Monday, July 09, 2007

LINCOLN - The Hoblit House at 505 N. College Ave. in Lincoln was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on May 22, 2007 by the National Park Service.

"The Hoblit House was placed in the National Register because of its wonderfully intact Italianate style of architecture," said Robert Coomer, director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, which administers the National Register program in Illinois.  "This is a prestigious recognition for Lincoln."

"It's always given me a lot of pride to see great historic sites like the Hoblit House placed in the National Register," said Sen. Larry Bomke (R-Springfield).  "This is excellent news for the City of Lincoln."

"It is important that we recognize these landmarks and to maintain that heritage for future generations," said State Rep. Rich Brauer (R-Petersburg).

The Hoblit House was built in 1874 and its historical integrity has been maintained ever since.  Its Italianate Style features include high interior ceilings and rows of evenly-spaced awning windows; tall, narrow and arched windows; front door windows; ornamental detail on the corners; and small, irregularly-located chimneys.  The porch was altered more than 100 years ago, but carries its own Empire Style historic value.

"The City of Lincoln is excited about adding another historic home to the list of historic structures in our community," said Lincoln Mayor Elizabeth Davis.  "It's very important that we preserve our heritage as well as our beautiful architecture."
