Hike where Lincoln walked

Press Release - Thursday, May 24, 2007

PETERSBURG - Those who like to take a walk in the country are invited to hike where Lincoln walked during the Lincoln Long-Gait hike scheduled for Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 at Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site.

The hiking event will cover from two to seven miles and is being coordinated by the Menard County Trails and Greenways group.  Participants will be able to hike one, two or all three of the trail loops which start and end at the restaurant parking lot, located directly east of the historic site entrance on Route 97.  All three loops, totaling seven miles, should take 2 ½ to 4 hours.  Hikers may want to allow time to stroll through the New Salem Historic Village after the hike.

Pre-registration is encouraged, but not mandatory.  Check in and registration will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. at the restaurant parking lot.  Hiking can begin any time after check in.  Drinks, snacks and restrooms will be provided at the registration area.  The $5 entry fee will pay for drinks, snacks and hot dogs for lunch.   The event is free to hikers under eight.  Complimentary event t-shirts will be given to the first 100 participants to start the hike.

An optional donation of $10 to the Menard County Trails and Greenways group will provide a 2007 family membership to that organization.  Organization goals include planning and construction of public trails in Menard County.  A county wide trails master plan was recently completed with funding assistance from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  Planning is underway to create a two mile trail between Petersburg and Lincoln's New Salem.

Registrations, including a name, address and number in group, can be mailed to: Lincoln's New Salem, 15588 History Lane, Petersburg IL 62675.  Checks should be made out to Menard County Trails and Greenways.  Registrations can also be e-mailed to wgerch@aol.com.  For more information, contact (217) 632-4000, or wgerch@aol.com.

Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, is located two miles south of Petersburg, or 18 miles northwest of Springfield on State Route 97.  It is open daily for free public tours.
