Would the real Abe Lincoln Please stand up

Press Release - Monday, April 23, 2007

ELIZABETH - Untangling the man and the myth isn't easy when the man is Abraham Lincoln, but a renowned storyteller is going to give it a try during "Lincoln Tales Tall & True" scheduled for Wednesday, April 25 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Apple River Fort State Historic Site in Elizabeth, Illinois.  The event is free and open to the public.

Storyteller and educator Brian "Fox" Ellis will use a blend of history and humor to trace Lincoln's rise from prairie state rail-splitter to America's favorite president.  Stories will be told from the perspective of Austin Gullaher, a childhood friend of Lincoln who once saved his life.  Ellis will take on the character of Gullaher during this first-person interpretation to bring history to life for adults and children in the audience.

This program is made possible in part by an award from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Illinois General Assembly.

The Apple River Fort State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (www.Illinois-History.gov), is a reconstruction of the 1830s civilian fort that was the site of a battle between Black Hawk's Sauk warriors and Apple River settlers during the Black Hawk War.  It is located along U.S. Route 20 in Elizabeth, Illinois, and is open daily through September 3, 2007 for free public tours.
