175th anniversary of Black Hawk War to be observed all year at Apple River Fort

ELIZABETH - A series of special events and a new exhibit will be featured during 2007 as Apple River Fort State Historic Site commemorates the 175th anniversary of the Black Hawk War.
 
"Lincoln Tales Tall & True" storytelling event
Wednesday, April 25, 7 - 8 p.m., Apple River Fort.  Free.     
 
Tracing Abraham Lincoln's rise from prairie state rail-splitter to America's favorite president, this blend of history and humor will attempt to disentangle the man from the myth.  Renowned storyteller Brian "Fox" Ellis steps into character to allow you to step back in time.  Funding for this program is provided for by the Illinois Humanities Council.

$12 per person for one session, or $30 to attend all three.
Monday, April 30 - Dr. Lucy Eldersveld Murphy, author of A Gathering of Rivers: Indians, Métis, and Mining in the Upper Great Lakes, 1737-1832 will trace the histories of Indian, multiracial, and mining communities in the western Great Lakes region during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.  Join us as Dr. Murphy gives voice to the Native women in the lead region.
Monday, June 11 - Dr. Kerry Trask will present notes from his book, Black Hawk: the Battle for the Heart of America.  Dr. Trask gives new and vivid life to the heroic efforts of Black Hawk and his men, illuminating the tragic history of frontier America through the eyes of those who were cast aside in the pursuit of the new nation's manifest destiny.
 
Monday, August 13 - Author Benjamin McLaughlin will take us on the hills and trails of the Black Hawk War with his book, In Black Hawk's Footsteps: A Trail Guide to Monuments, Museums, and Battlefields of the Black Hawk War of 1832.  McLaughlin illustrates the terrain and land which Black Hawk loved and which he fought for.  Perhaps you will be inspired to travel the path of the war throughout Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
New Exhibit - "The Transformation of Black Hawk: Frontier Terrorist to
            Advertising Icon, Sainthood and Beyond"
Opens Friday, May 4, 2007 - October 31, 2007
Apple River Fort Interpretive Center.  Free.
 
This exclusive exhibition will explain through text and artifacts how Black Hawk, leader of the dissident Sauk and Fox Indians, after his crushing defeat by the combined forces of the United States government, Illinois State and the Michigan Territorial militia, was transformed from a tragic survivor to a lodestone for commercial enterprise, the focal point of romantic musings, and the spiritual guide for a pseudo-Christian-Voodoo sect in New Orleans.

Friday, May 4, 5:30 p.m., Apple River Fort Interpretive Center.
$10 per person.  
 
A wine and cheese Opening Reception for the new "The Transformation of Black Hawk" exhibit.  Ticket holders receive a premier bottle of Black Hawk or Elizabeth wine from Massbach Ridge Winery.

Guest exhibitor Cliff Krainik will present a lively discussion on the transformation of Black Hawk beginning in 1832 and continuing on to his impact today.
 
Fire on the Frontier special event
Saturday, May 5, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Apple River Fort.  Free.
 
Experience the fort as it was more than 100 years ago as the local militia prepares for the battle at the Apple River Fort. The militia will drill, fire, and recruit at scheduled times throughout the day as the women and children demonstrate pioneer skills critical to their survival on the frontier.  Partial funding for this event comes from the Galena
Rotary Club.
 
175th Anniversary Black Hawk War Commemoration Weekend
Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Apple River Fort.  Free.
 
Participate in our commemoration of the 175th anniversary of the Black Hawk War with special living history demonstrations, and a memorial service and exhibit commemorating both the white and Native American soldiers and warriors who fought for their beliefs during the Black Hawk War. 
 
Prairie Folklore Theater Presents "Black Hawk's Band:  A Native American View of Illinois History."
Saturday, June 23, 7 p.m., Apple River Fort.
$5 for adults, $2 for children, $10 for families.
Imagine sitting around a campfire with Black Hawk and his friends sharing creation myths and history, fancy dancing and drumming songs.  Revisit the legacy of Black Hawk in this dynamic interpretation of American history from a Native American point of view.  Featuring storytellers Jo Lakota and Brian "Fox" Ellis, singer/songwriter Barry Cloyd, and the Eagle Ridge Singers.  Funding provided for in part by a grant from the Freeport Arts Center.
 
Native American Ghost Stories (Full Moon!)
Friday, October 26, 6 - 8 p.m., Apple River Fort.
Free, but donations accepted.
 
What are the scary stories of the first Americans?  Join storyteller Brian "Fox' Ellis in this terrifying tour of American Indian haunted legends and folklore.  Stories from the Seneca and Ojibwa, Illiniwek and Miami are woven together with traditional chants that are sure to send a shiver down the spine of even the bravest listeners.  The stories begin from 6-6:45 p.m., followed by a short intermission with hot chocolate and marshmallows.  The scariest stories are reserved for 7 - 8 p.m.
