Litchfield property listed in National Register of Historic Places
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Belevidere Café, Motel and Gas Station at 817 Old Route 66 in Litchfield was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on February 21, 2007 by the National Park Service.
"The Belevidere's Route 66 connections helped place it on the nation's official list of historically significant properties," said Robert Coomer, director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, which administers the National Register program in Illinois. "This is a prestigious recognition for the Café, Motel and Gas Station as well as the community of Litchfield."
The Belevidere is a notable example of the types of commercial businesses that once flourished along Route 66. The complex contains a gas station, motel and café built in 1936 and two additional motel units and a residence built around 1950. All of the structures remain remarkably intact, maintaining their historic design and setting.
"This recognition for the Belevidere honors an important stop full of history for Illinoisans and all who have traveled along Route 66," said Sen. Deanna Demuzio (D-Carlinville).
"Litchfield and all of the communities along historic Route 66 invoke some of our nation's finest times and continue being great places to live, work and raise a family," said State Rep. Gary Hannig (D-Litchfield). "I will continue supporting efforts that recognize our area's historical significance and promote the good things our communities have to offer."
