Meals just like great-great-great-great grandma used to make
ELIZABETH - You probably won't find this program on the Food Channel. "From Spark to Finish," an authentic 1830s hearth cooking class, will be held Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Apple River Fort State Historic Site in Elizabeth, Illinois. Participants must pre-register by calling (815) 858-2028 or by email at susang@appleriverfort.org. There is a $25 participation fee.
Participants will experience a hearth and Dutch oven workshop using hands-on skills from the earliest fire-starting techniques to choosing the best wood. Students will learn how to prepare a delicious dinner in the manner used by early Illinois settlers. The menu will include hot cabbage salad, roast loin of pork with apple glaze, roasted root vegetables, apple-cranberry crisp, whole wheat bread, fresh butter, and assorted beverages.
The class will be taught by Don "Pappy" Horne, retired chef and historic interpreter, and his wife Cheryl.
The Apple River Fort State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, is a reconstruction of the 1830s civilian fort that was the site of a battle between Black Hawk's Sauk warriors and Apple River settlers during the Black Hawk War. It is located along U.S. Route 20 in Elizabeth, Illinois, and is open Wednesday through Sunday for free public tours. The site will be open seven days per week April 16 - September 3, 2007.
