SHELTER FOR ILLINOIS HOMELESS VETERANS OPENS Lance CPL Nicholas Larson Home for Veterans to provide medical care, education, and employment opportunities for U.S. Veterans
(WHEATON) - Today, Lt. Governor Pat Quinn attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Lance CPL Nicholas Larson Home for Veterans - a not-for-profit transitional living facility for all U.S. Veterans named in honor of Wheaton's fallen Marine hero.
Quinn was joined by Anne and David Larson, parents of Marine Lance CPL Nicholas D. Larson.
Marine Lance CPL Nicholas D. Larson died November 9, 2004 as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was 19 years old.
The Lance CPL Nicholas Larson Home for Veterans provides a range of services for U.S. veterans to assist them in leading productive, independent lives. Those services include: GED assistance, psychotherapy, substance abuse assessment and treatment, legal assistance, and independent living skills.
In addition, the Lance CPL Nicholas Larson Home for Veterans has developed partnerships with hospitals, physicians, lawyers, educators, and business professionals to provide services off-site. Staff and volunteers will provide transportation to these appointments.
The Lance CPL Nicholas Larson Home for Veterans is currently accepting applications. To be admitted one must be a U.S. Military Veteran. Veterans who were honorably discharged are eligible to apply.
Quinn also presented the Shelter with a hand-drawn portrait of Lance CPL Larson. The portrait has been a part of the Portrait of a Soldier memorial, a series of hand-drawn sketches of the fallen heroes of the Global War on Terror
Lt. Governor Quinn was also joined by Robert M. "Doc" Adams, Founder and Co-Chairman of the Board of the Lance CPL Nicholas Larson Home for Veterans. Adams served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. C. James Carr, Mayor of the City of Wheaton; Illinois Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia (D-Aurora); and Rochelle Crump, Assistant Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs were also in attendance.
"The men and women who served the Land of Lincoln fought tirelessly in defense of our democracy," said Quinn. "I salute the Lance CPL Nicholas Larson Home for Veterans for giving our veterans the assistance they need to get back on their feet and lead healthy, productive lives."
