Creative Endeavors featured during October 14 "Poets in the Parlor"
SPRINGFIELD - The Vachel Lindsay Association and the Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site will present the next in the monthly 2006 "Poets in the Parlor" series, featuring members of the Centralia, Illinois writers' group Creative Endeavors, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 14 at the Lindsay Home, 603 South Fifth Street.
Members of Creative Endeavors will read selections from Vachel Lindsay as well as from their own works. Creative Endeavors is a group of writers who meet once a month at St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia to exchange ideas or find help or inspiration. The group was established in 1976 as an offshoot of the Centralia Cultural Society. Group member Lana Shaw from Centralia is a poet whose work has been recognized by the Centralia Historical Museum; The Scroll, the Kaskaskia Community College newspaper; Area Arts - Centralia Cultural Society; and The Sangamon State Alchemist Review. Nancy Sales of Salem and Mike Warden of Centralia have written a number of short stories, and both have novels in progress.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the 30-minute program. Tours of the historic home will be offered both before and after the performance. The video "Look Into Your Heart: The Challenge of Vachel Lindsay" may be viewed throughout the afternoon.
The Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (www.Illinois-History.gov), is the birthplace and longtime residence of poet, author and artist Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, 1879 - 1931. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. for free public tours.
