Quinn Joins Illinois Police Officers Memorial to Honor 49 Fallen Officers At Annual Service

Press Release - Thursday, May 04, 2006

SPRINGFIELD — Lt Gov Pat Quinn joined the Illinois Police Officers Memorial Committee Thursday to honor 49 law enforcement and corrections officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and add their names to the memorial statue.

A memorial service is held each year on the first Thursday in May to honor those officers who have died in the previous year. Forty-nine new names will be added, including 43 historic names from the National Police Memorial in Washington D.C. not currently featured on the state memorial. The oldest of those historic names is Carmi City Marshal William Miller who was stabbed by a prisoner in 1880.

The fallen officers being honored are Officer Patrick Righi-Barnard (2004), Burbank Police Department; Officer Steven M. Zourkas, Niles Police Department; Sergeant Daniel P. Figgins, St. Charles Police Department; Detective Anthony J. Hosey, Illinois State University Police Department; Special Agent Robert R. Hardesty, FBI and Officer Robin G. Vogel, Decatur Police Department.

All law enforcement is included whether the honoree is a county deputy, city officer, or an officer from a state or federal agency. The statue was built entirely with private donations and features the names of Illinois officers who have died in the line of duty.

There are over one thousand names on the Illinois Police Officers Memorial dating back to 1854.
