Guided nature walks and canoe tours offered at Lincoln's New Salem
PETERSBURG, IL - History isn't the only thing visitors can enjoy this summer at Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site. Guided nature walks and canoe tours that begin at the reconstructed 1830s log village are being offered this summer.
Guided nature walks along the Mentor Graham Trail leave from the Visitor Center at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday when a sign announcing the walk is posted. Naturalist interns from Illinois College in Jacksonville will conduct the three-quarter-mile, 45-minute walks, discussing fun facts about numerous plants, including those indigenous to the area as well as those that have been introduced. The walks are free and open to the public, and no reservations are required.
Guided canoe trips on the Sangamon River will be offered July 8, 15, 22, 29 and August 5. Participants will learn about the history of the Sangamon River and the vegetation and wildlife found along its banks. The trip will cover about nine miles and last about four hours. Canoes will not be provided, although information about canoe rentals can be provided. The trips are open to the public, but are limited to the first 20 people to sign up. Reservations are required, and may be made by calling (217) 632-4000 and asking for Paul or Eckhart.
Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (www.Illinois-History.gov), is located along Route 97 about two miles south of Petersburg and 20 miles northwest of Springfield. It is open daily for free public tours.
