"The Best of Lincoln and Douglas" June 27 at Lincoln Log Cabin
LERNA - The key moments from the nation's most famous political discourse will be re-enacted during "The Best of Lincoln and Douglas" to be held Tuesday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Visitor Center auditorium at Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site. The event is free and open to the public.
Local Abraham Lincoln impersonator B.F. McClerren and Stephen A. Douglas impersonator Leonard Baldwin of Eldorado, Illinois will re-enact the best moments compiled from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas Debates held throughout Illinois.
In Dr. William M. Chambers' introduction of Lincoln at the Charleston debate on September 18, 1858, he said, "No one here today can be ignorant of the momentous issues facing this country. The spread of slavery into the territories of Kansas and Nebraska threaten the very foundation of the republic." While Lincoln lost his bid for U.S. Senator to Douglas that year, the national prominence he gained during the debates helped pave the way for his election as President two years later.
Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (www.Illinois-History.gov), was the last home of Thomas and Sarah Bush Lincoln, father and stepmother pf Abraham Lincoln. It is located eight miles south of Charleston and is open daily through Labor Day for free public tours. For more information, call (217) 345-1845 or visit lincolnlogcabin.org.
