(CHICAGO) -- On Thursday, May 25, Lt. Governor Pat Quinn declared Fenwick Water Polo Day throughout the State of Illinois, to honor the boys' and girls' varsity water polo teams of Fenwick High School in Oak Park. Both teams ended the 2005-06 season by winning their state championships - the third in a row for both teams - for an historic dual "three-peat."
The boys' team ended the season with a 35-0 record, winning the state title with a 19-5 victory over Chicago Latin on May 13. The Fenwick boys' varsity team has won a total of four state championships since 2002, the first year water polo was officially sanctioned as a team sport by the Illinois High School Sports Association. The girls posted a season record of 27-1, and took the championship with a 13-5 win over Chicago St. Ignatius. Five members of each team have been named to the Illinois All-State Team.
Quinn was joined by team members and their coaches at a special ceremony to announce the declaration in the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago.
"I am very proud of the historic achievement of these student-athletes and their coaches," Quinn said. "I believe the persistence, determination and good sportsmanship displayed by each member of these championship teams sets an excellent example for students throughout the State of Illinois."
