LT. GOV. QUINN AND FRANCIS CARDINAL GEORGE CELEBRATE GRAND OPENING OF NEW HOUSING FOR SENIOR CITIZEN VETERANS
CHICAGO—Today, Lt. Governor Pat Quinn joined Francis Cardinal George to celebrate Military Appreciation Month with a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the grand opening of Catholic Charities' Bishop Goedert Residence at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, Illinois.
The Bishop Goedert Residence is a 70-unit, subsidized apartment complex that will provide affordable housing for senior citizen veterans and their widows.
Quinn also highlighted "Veterans Cash" - the new Illinois instant scratch-off lottery ticket whose net proceeds are funneled into the Illinois Veterans Assistance Trust Fund. The Illinois Veterans Assistance Trust Fund provides health care, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder treatment, disability benefits, and homelessness assistance for Illinois veterans.
The Illinois Veterans' Health Initiative, legislation spearheaded by Quinn's office and signed into law by Governor Rod Blagojevich in August 2005, created the Illinois Veterans' Assistance Trust Fund, which is administered by the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.
Proceeds from Veterans Cash will also benefit Veterans Care, legislation passed this week by the Illinois General Assembly which extends comprehensive, affordable health care to Illinois' uninsured veterans.
The Veterans Cash lottery ticket has been on sale since February. To date, more than one million dollars has been raised for veterans programs.
Currently, Illinois is home to more than 980,000 veterans dating back to World War II. More than 4,700 National Guardsmen and reservists are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
