Lt. Gov. and President Lincoln re-enactor congratulate 200 energy-efficient Illinois students

Press Release - Wednesday, May 10, 2006

Springfield - Today, Lt. Governor Pat Quinn congratulated students and teachers from schools across Illinois who participated in EnergyNet - a program that turns students into energy detectives who explore their schools to find ways to save energy.

"We salute the students and teachers who worked hard to learn about energy conservation and applied those lessons to finding commonsense ways to save tax-payer dollars by making their schools more energy efficient," Quinn said.

Lt. Governor Quinn's office awarded the EnergyNet program a $10,000 grant to fund the energy-efficient learning program for nine of the Illinois schools participating.

Soon after, students from East St. Louis to Rockford were conducting energy audits of their schools and developing plans to better conserve energy.  At the John F. Kennedy School in Spring Valley, a fourth-grade detective team known as the Energy Blunder Breakers are investigating the school's energy practices.  And students at Abingdon High School are developing a wind farm to provide electricity to a consortium of area schools and businesses.

"These students are learning how to improve their environment while making a difference in the community," Quinn said.  "We challenge the students here today to continue using the skills they have learned, and in so doing they will inspire others to make wise energy choices."
