Breese, Skokie and Chicago students win D.A.R. Awards during annual Illinois History Expo
SPRINGFIELD - Students from Breese, Skokie and Chicago won awards from the Illinois State Organization, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution during the annual Illinois History Expo held May 3 in Springfield.
"These awards are presented for the best projects or papers dealing with a small town's history," said Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA) Director Robert Coomer. The Agency sponsors Expo in cooperation with the Chicago Metro History Education Center. All of the DAR awards also include a $50 cash prize.
Abbie Richter of Breese Junior High School was honored in the junior division for her exhibit "Dr. Sarah Hackett Stevenson." Her teacher is Charles Hilmess. Also in the junior division, Robin David, Vi Nguyen and Rebecca Lisitza of East Prairie Middle School, Skokie, won for their exhibit "Hidden Heroines." Their teacher is Suzan Bates.
In the junior division, Peter Contos of won for "Faces of Aunt Jemima." His teacher is Leslie Contos. And Moria Hodges and Emma Rovit of the Latin School of Chicago won for their exhibit "Quackery vs. Science." Their teacher is Theresa Fister.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is composed of members who are descended from Revolutionary War soldiers. The group supports patriotic and community service activities, sponsors the DAR Good Citizen Award, assists with genealogical research, actively volunteers at veterans' hospitals, and recently placed its Manual for Citizenship on-line.
More than 1,400 junior and senior high school students from across the state participated in the May 3 Expo. The students were winners selected during regional history fairs held earlier this year.
