LINCOLN'S NEW SALEM VOLUNTEER TRAINING SCHEDULED

Press Release - Saturday, April 01, 2006

PETERSBURG, IL - A series of training sessions have been scheduled for persons interested in volunteering at Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site.

A series of three Volunteer Interpreter Training sessions will introduce individuals to volunteer opportunities, the history of New Salem, and interpreting that history to the public.  The sessions will be held on three successive Saturdays - April 1, 8 and 15.

The April 1 session will begin at 9 a.m. at the Saw and Grist Mill along Route 97.  Charlie Starling and archaeologist Robert Mazrim will lead a walking tour entitled "The Many Pasts of New Salem."  Participants will then view the site's orientation film and be introduced to the different opportunities available to Lincoln's New Salem volunteers.

The April 8 session will begin at 9 a.m. in the Visitor Center with a presentation about interpreting history to New Salem visitors.  Participants will observe interpreters in action in the reconstructed log village.  Following lunch, new volunteers can meet the interpreters they saw in the village and ask questions.  As a special treat, participants will receive a gift for attending the training.

The last session will begin at 9 a.m. April 15, and will feature new volunteers accompanying seasoned volunteers as they interpret history in the village.  When the session ends, they will be ready to make history come to life for the tens of thousands of people from around the world who visit Lincoln's New Salem every year.

Advance registration is required for the volunteer training.  To sign up or obtain more information, contact Candy or Mary Ann at (217) 632-4000.

Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, is a reproduction of the 1830s log village where Abraham Lincoln lived for six years.  It is located along Route 97 about two miles south of Petersburg and 20 miles northwest of Springfield.
