Lt. Gov. Quinn kicks off event and makes the first Illinois donation
CHICAGO - Wednesday, Lt. Governor Pat Quinn and "Souper Bowl of Caring" President and Founder Rev. Brad Smith saluted "Souper Bowl of Caring" volunteers from groups across Chicago and encouraged young people to become "Super Heroes" by participating in "Souper Bowl of Caring 2006".
Souper Bowl of Caring is a national and global effort designed for youth to take action against hunger. Begun in 1990 by Rev. Smith and his church in South Carolina, participation in Souper Bowl of Caring has grown to include groups in all 50 states, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Puerto Rico and the Marshall Islands.
Each year schools, churches, and organizations join thousands of people across the world to collect dollars in soup pots on or around Super Bowl Sunday. The money collected is donated to local food banks, soup kitchens, and charities of the volunteers' choice. This year participants are encouraged to donate part of their proceeds to Hurricane Katrina Relief organizations.
Souper Bowl of Caring helps young people identify hunger in their communities and create a local solution. To date, the Souper Bowl of Caring has raised more than $24 million. In 2005 alone, more than 440 Illinois volunteer groups raised over $180,000 which was donated to the charities of their choice.
Lt. Governor Quinn was joined by Bob Forney, President and CEO of America's Second Harvest, the nation's largest charitable hunger-relief organization.
"Those standing in food lines are everyday people, senior citizens, the unemployed, the working poor, and parents with their children," Lt. Governor Quinn said. "I encourage Illinois young people to roll up their sleeves and create a local solution to hunger by participating in Souper Bowl of Caring 2006."
