LT.GOV. AND STUDENTS ENCOURAGE INDOOR WALKING IN WINTER WEATHER

Press Release - Wednesday, January 04, 2006

Chicago— Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn joined students from Grimes Middle School to encourage Illinois citizens to keep their New Year's resolution to lose weight by walking one step at a time with Walk Across Illinois.

January  is a great time to kick-start your commitment to a healthier lifestyle.  Walk Across Illinois is an easy way to get your friends and family involved in something new, active, and healthy," Quinn said.

Walk Across Illinois is designed to encourage Illinois residents to walk at least 167 miles this year, the equivalent of walking across Illinois from the Mississippi River to Lake Michigan.  In August of 2001, Quinn hiked 167 miles from the Mississippi River in Rock Island to Lake Michigan in Chicago to promote decent health care for everyone.

Grimes Middle School organized a walk-a-thon at the end of September to raise money for the Jones County School District in Mississippi recovering from Hurricane Katrina.  More than185 students walked down a busy business corridor collecting donations from residents and friends. After completing the walk the students raised around $3,700.

"Grimes students are an inspiration to all of us," Quinn said. " They are living proof that people of any age can make a difference one step at a time."

Quinn honored Grimes Middle School with the Hometown Hero Award for their initiative. After presenting the award, Quinn lead 31 students on a half mile walk.

Walk Across Illinois participation is catching on - so far, over 3,400 participants have already logged more than 167,000 miles.

Walk Across Illinois participants can start taking their first steps by signing up at www.WalkAcrossIllinois.org.  The interactive website allows walkers to track their progress on a virtual 167-mile walk across Illinois.  Walk Across Illinois participants will also receive e-mail updates with health tips, hiking ideas, and great Illinois places to walk.
