WALK ACROSS ILLINOIS HITS A HEART-HEALTHY MILESTONE: MORE THAN 160,000 MILES LOGGED

Press Release - Wednesday, December 14, 2005

CHICAGO - Winter weather isn't stopping a new batch of Walk Across Illinois participants from hitting the outdoors and logging miles.  After a successful August launch of Walk Across Illinois -- a program designed to encourage Illinois residents to walk at least 167 miles -- the Lt. Governor's Office is proud to announce a new, heart-healthy milestone.

More than 3,300 Walk Across Illinois participants are making the most of winter weather and earning their miles through seasonal alternatives like shoveling, snowshoeing and Cross Country skiing.  Activities like walking, bowling, running and step aerobics are other popular ways walkers are virtually walking across Illinois.

"December is a great time to get your friends and family involved in something new, active and healthy," Quinn said.  "If it's shoveling snow, cross country skiing or even hitting the gym for some time on the treadmill, we can all stay fit one step at a time."

The Walk Across Illinois route is the equivalent of walking across Illinois from the Mississippi River to Lake Michigan.  In August of 2001, Quinn hiked 167 miles from the Mississippi River in Rock Island to Lake Michigan in Chicago to promote decent health care for everyone.

The interactive website at www.WalkAcrossIllinois.org allows walkers to track their progress on a virtual walk across Illinois.  Walk Across Illinois participants also receive e-mail updates with health tips, hiking ideas and a list great Illinois places to walk.  Website visitors can also check out the new "Featured Walker" page.  It highlights Walk Across Illinois participants who have successfully completed the 167-mile challenge and gives readers a personal look at how Walk Across Illinois improved their health.
