QUINN JOINS WITH CULVER'S RESTAURANTS TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS AND DONATIONS FOR THE 2005 DAY OF WARMTH
SPRINGFIELD -- Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn joined Culver's co-founder Craig Culver today to announce
November 15 as the 2005 Day of Warmth. Ten percent of all sales on Tuesday, November 15 will go to statewide organizations which work directly with families and individuals struggling to pay their energy bills.
"At a time of record prices and record profits for Big Oil and gas companies, it's good to know businesses like Culver's are doing their part to help make ends meet for thousands of energy consumers," Quinn said.
Last year, Illinois locations of Culver's Restaurants raised more than $18,000. This year, Culver's hopes to double that amount with 60 stores participating in the program.
All the money raised from the 2005 Day of Warmth will directly benefit residents in the county where each participating Culver's restaurant in located.
The Day of Warmth started in Wisconsin in 2003. This year, its Illinois partner will be the Salvation Army. Through the Salvation Army's statewide agencies, money from the 2005 Day of Warmth will be distributed by early December.
"Home heating costs could rise by 70 percent this year and Illinois residents everywhere are bracing themselves for a back-breaking winter," Quinn said. "Everyone who stops by a Culver's tomorrow, November 15, will get some good food for a good cause," Quinn said.
According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the average American family spends about 5% of household income on energy, but the typical low-income family spends as much as 20% of its income on energy.
Quinn chaired the "Special Task Force on the Condition and Future of Illinois Energy Infrastructure" which examined ways the state could cut electric demand, promote energy efficiency and utilize energy sources such as wind, solar and biomass. In 1983, Quinn spearheaded the consumer referendum campaign which won passage of the Citizens Utility Board.
