"INTO THE WOODS" OCTOBER 8 AND 9 AT APPLE RIVER FORT COMPLEMENTS AREA CRAFT FAIRS
ELIZABETH, IL - People who are accompanying craft fair fans in northwestern Illinois can enjoy an added attraction this year with "Into the Woods" being held Saturday and Sunday, October 8 and 9, at Apple River Fort State Historic Site in Elizabeth, Illinois. The event is free and open to the public, and will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
The event invites adventurous visitors to literally go "into the woods" with persons portraying 1830s settlers and American Indians to learn the fine arts of hide tanning, pemmican, meat jerky preparation, rail splitting, making lead bullets, woodworking, and blacksmithing. Recipes for the preparation of traditional "spirits" (beverages) will also be part of the event. New this year will be an 1830s tavern complete with live musical entertainment, root beer, and other tavern foods.
"Visitors may join the activities at any time during the day," said Apple River Fort Site Manager Susan Gordy. "We guarantee that visitors who go ‘into the woods' will come ‘out of the woods' with great memories of the weekend."
Apple River Fort State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (www.Illinois-History.gov), is a reconstruction of the 1830s civilian fort that was the site of a battle between Black Hawk's Sauk warriors and Apple River settlers during the Black Hawk War. It is located along U.S. Route 20 in Elizabeth, Illinois and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for free public tours. For more information, call (815) 858-2028.
