"TAVERN ON THE GREENE" NOVEMBER 4 IN WOODBINE TO BENEFIT APPLE RIVER FORT HISTORIC FOUNDATION
WOODBINE, IL - Samuel Johnson said it best in 1776: "There is nothing which has yet been contrived by man by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern or inn."
Happiness and history will mingle during "Tavern on the Greene," featuring an authentic 1830s tavern atmosphere, scheduled for Friday, November 4 at 7 p.m. at Woodbine Bend Clubhouse in Woodbine, Illinois. The event is sponsored by the Apple River Fort Historic Foundation Inc., and is a fundraiser for that organization.
The popular restaurant, Woodbine Bend, will come to life as an 1830s Tavern complete with drinking mugs, tavern songs, waitresses in historic costume and local celebrities either behind the bar or waiting tables. The evening begins with a multi-course meal planned from 1830s recipe books by Woodbine's own Chef Dan. Between courses, tavern goers will be entertained by tavern amusements such as fire eating, rousing tavern songs, beautiful ballads, and more.
Tickets are $35 each and can be purchased at the Apple River Fort State Historic Site in Elizabeth, Illinois or at Woodbine Bend, located along U.S. Route 20 in Woodbine. All proceeds benefit the educational programs at Apple River Fort.
Apple River Fort State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (www.Illinois-History.gov), is a reconstruction of the 1830s civilian fort that was the site of a battle between Black Hawk's Sauk warriors and Apple River settlers during the Black Hawk War. It is located along U.S. Route 20 in Elizabeth, Illinois and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for free public tours. For more information, call (815) 858-2028.
