19th CENTURY BONNET WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 24 - 25 IN FREEPORT
FREEPORT, IL - Want to learn how to make women's bonnets from the early 1800s? We've got you covered.
A Historic Reproduction Early 19th Century Bonnet Workshop has been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, September 24 and 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Stephenson County Historical Society, 1440 S. Carroll Avenue, Freeport. The cost is $65 for both days, including lunch. Participants need to bring millinery needles, straight pins, scissors, tape measure, thread, buttons and fabric.
Workshop participants will make their own buckram bonnet form and then decorate it with silk, taffeta, wool or velvet. The fabric and trims will be available for purchase at the workshop. Buckram bonnets were generally not covered in cotton calicoes. The workshop is co-sponsored by the Stephenson County Historical Society and Apple River Fort State Historic Site. Apple River Fort State Historic Site in Elizabeth, Illinois, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (www.Illinois-History.gov), is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for public tours. The Stephenson County Historical Society Museum in Freeport is open to the public from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
