QUINN PRESENTS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES TO UNITED BUSINESS ASSOCATION OF MIDWAY

Press Release - Thursday, September 08, 2005

CHICAGO - Today, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn presented economic development opportunities through the Illinois Main Street program to the United Business Association of Midway (UBAM).

Nearly 250 business owners and merchants make up UBAM.  The organization is aimed at improving economic development near Midway Airport.  UBAM recently submitted an application as an Associate Level town to the Illinois Main Street program.

Quinn discussed the Illinois Main Street program and how it is designed to encourage economic development and revitalization.  The business area spans a two-mile radius around Midway Airport from Central Avenue to Austin Boulevard.

UBAM -- a neighborhood organization now celebrating its 20th year -- recently dedicated a park to former business owner and community leader Donald J. Feely.  UBAM took an abandoned gas station site and turned it into a memorial park.  UBAM also aims to preserve its local history and economy.  In addition to its nearly 250 current members, UBAM has reached out to 100 more local businesses in an effort to strengthen the Association's membership.

Nearly 75 UBAM members including Alderman Frank Olivo (13th Ward) and Alderman Mike Zalewski (23rd Ward) joined Quinn.

The Lieutenant Governor's Office administers the Illinois Main Street program.  Quinn chairs the seven-member Advisory Council.  The Main Street program is based on a national model that offers communities help with issues of historic preservation, economic development and downtown improvements.  Illinois is one of 40 states that belong to the National Main Street program administered through the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Illinois is home to 56 Main Street communities.  For more information about the program and upcoming events, visit www.IllinoisMainStreet.org.
