Du Quoin State Fairgrounds Announces Free Kids' Fishing Day in July

Press Release - Wednesday, June 18, 2025

DU QUOIN, IL - The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), will host a free kids' fishing day on Tuesday, July 8 at 9 a.m.

"Fishing is a great sport that exposes kids to nature while teaching them the importance of patience and persistence," said Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. "Events like this free fishing day encourage our neighbors to visit the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds and take advantage of activities and opportunities throughout the year, not just during the fair."

Fishing poles, bait and basic instruction will be provided by IDNR. Advance registration is required, and participation will be limited to the first 25 kids to sign up.

While no fishing license is required for those under the age of 16, those 16 and older will need a fishing license to participate. Standard fishing licenses can be purchased for $15 at vendors throughout Illinois or online. Fishers who are blind or disabled or on active military service are exempt from Illinois' fishing license requirement.

For more information or to register, call (618) 542-1511. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed on holidays.

On the day of the event, participants will meet at 9 a.m. in front of Expo Hall on the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds. Remember to bring sunscreen, bug spray, water and a chair.

In addition to the fishing clinic, the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds offers access to a variety of no-cost activities this summer. From sidewalk chalk events each Friday in June to nature trails for hikes and bike rides and shady spots for picnics, visitors are invited to take advantage of the beautiful outdoor space throughout the summer and beyond.
