Illinois Capital Development Board Releases Over $4.2 Million in Rebuild Illinois Funding to Governors State University for the Replacement of HVAC Systems

Press Release - Thursday, April 15, 2021

UNIVERSITY PARK - The Illinois Capital Development Board today announced over $4.2 million has been released for the replacement of HVAC systems at Governors State University. The funding will help address deferred maintenance projects on the Governors State University campus that have been stalled due to a lack of investment by previous administrations. Made possible by Governor Pritzker's bipartisan capital plan, the first in nearly a decade, the renovation work will create good jobs and economic opportunities for residents in the surrounding community. CDB will oversee the project's renovation under the protocol for state-appropriated capital projects.

"It is the duty of elected officials to provide young people with the tools and resources they need to shape their future and achieve their dreams," said Governor JB Pritzker. "With funding from the Rebuild Illinois capital plan, Governors State University will be able to complete long-needed maintenance work, further cementing its place as an educational leader that excels in preparing talented students for the careers of tomorrow."

"I am thankful to the State of Illinois for addressing the overdue maintenance of universities and colleges," said CDB Executive Director Jim Underwood.  "The Rebuild Illinois capital plan is essential to upgrading and improving facilities throughout the state."

"Governors State University is excited to begin work on this project which will improve the air distribution and quality for our students, faculty, and staff. This work is vital as we continue evaluating and updating our COVID-19 safety precautions. Additionally, the HVAC renovations will create greater system efficiencies to increase performance while lowering costs. We greatly appreciate the distribution and approved release of these funds by Governor Pritzker," said Governors State University President Dr. Cheryl Green.

"Illinois' large university and community college system is vitally important to our long-term economic success, and it's essential that we make investments to these institutions that will allow them to perform at their highest. I appreciate this attention being given to the infrastructure needs of Governors State University, and I'm certain those using the campus will appreciate the improved conditions brought by a new HVAC system," remarked State Representative Anthony DeLuca (D - Chicago Heights).

The historic Rebuild Illinois capital plan passed with bipartisan super-majorities and will invest $45 billion in roads, bridges, railways, universities, early childhood centers, and state facilities like the new crime lab and veterans' homes, creating, and supporting an estimated 540,000 jobs over the life of the six-year plan and revitalizing local economies across the state.
