Illinois 89 bridge demolition set for August 22
SPRING VALLEY - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that a planned implosion of the remaining three truss spans of the old Illinois 89 bridge over the Illinois River will take place, weather permitting, the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 22.
To ensure public safety, IDOT is working with local authorities to establish and enforce a perimeter for both pedestrian and river traffic beginning at 7:30 a.m. The public is urged to cooperate to keep the event on schedule.
Illinois 89 will be closed at 8 a.m. on the south from Bottom Road and from the north at the CSX Railroad bridge. The Spring Valley Boat Club, Barto Landing, ADM, Cargill and other impacted properties will be evacuated temporarily.
The roadway will reopen to traffic by 10 a.m., but the river channel will be impassable for 24 hours.
The video of the first implosion on August 14th can be viewed by clicking here.
The new $41 million Illinois 89 bridge opened in June. The project is nearing completion, with landscaping and embankment work remaining.
