Turas Returns to the Sandburg Songbag Concert Series

GALESBURG, IL - Turas, the popular Peoria Celtic Band, returns to the Sandburg Songbag Series on Sunday, September 10, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site in Galesburg.  The Songbag concerts are now on the second Sunday of each month starting at 4 p.m.

In Gaelic, Turas means trip or journey, and the band has made the journey from Peoria to Galesburg a number of times.  The group of friends share songs, stories, and good times - what the Irish call craic.  Instrumentation includes percussion, whistle, bodhran, accordion, uilleann pipes, guitar, mandolin, vocals, and more.  Turas plays a wide variety of Irish/Celtic music and never fails to deliver the good music and good times.  Their website is

The performance by Turas will be in the Sandburg Site's Barn, 313 E. Third Street, Galesburg. The show starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. with a break for refreshments around 5 p.m. A donation of $5 per person is suggested.  The concert is sponsored by Pat and Kelly Kane, the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. 

The October 8 Songbag concert will feature the Galesburg band No Reason.  Keith Reins and Tara McGovern return November 12 with "Folk Songs You Never Sang in Grade School."

Carl Sandburg was a collector and performer of America's folk songs. The series is named in honor of Sandburg's book "The American Songbag," published in 1927.  The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site includes the home where the famed poet and biographer was born.
