Governor Quinn Announces Investment for New Community Health Center in Garfield Park
CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today announced a $2 million investment to construct a new community health center in the Garfield Park neighborhood in Chicago. The funds, included in Governor Quinn's Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program, will allow the state to reduce healthcare spending and save taxpayer dollars. Today's announcement is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to ensure all people have access to quality healthcare and improve the health and well-being of people throughout Illinois.
"In Illinois we believe quality healthcare for all is a fundamental right," Governor Quinn said. "No one should have to worry about traveling far and wide to receive quality care. An investment in a new community health center in Garfield Park is an investment in the health and wellness of the people of Chicago. It is also an essential step in ensuring that everyone has access to the medical services they need."
The $2 million state investment will help the Lawndale Christian Health Center construct the 24,000-square-foot, two story West Garfield Park Health and Wellness Center, which will provide additional services to Chicago residents. The center will include 10 exam rooms, space for behavioral health services and wellness and exercise space.
"We are very thankful to Governor Quinn and the State of Illinois," Lawndale Christian Health Center Chief Executive Officer Bruce Miller said. "With this funding, over 6,000 community residents will gain better access to health care services in a beautiful facility, stimulating a culture of health and generating economic vibrancy. This is great news for West Garfield Park."
Community health centers like this are not-for-profit entities created by Congress to meet the healthcare needs of underserved communities and high-risk patients. These centers fill a void by providing care for those whom other providers often do not serve, including the low-income, uninsured or homeless; or those with HIV/AIDS, substance abuse problems or special medical needs.
The project is part of Governor Quinn's $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! program, which will support more than 439,000 jobs over six years. Illinois Jobs Now! is the largest construction program in Illinois history, and is one of the largest construction programs in the nation.
