Governor Quinn Announces $3.3 Million in Upgrades at Three Chicago Readiness Centers

CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn today announced capital investments of more than $3.3 million to upgrade three Illinois Army National Guard Readiness Centers operated by the Illinois Department of Military Affairs in Chicago. The upgrades are part of Governor Quinn’s agenda to create jobs and drive Illinois’ economy forward.
“These needed repairs to our state-owned buildings will prolong the life of these facilities and spur the local economies,” Governor Quinn said. “These upgrades will also employ a number of construction workers, which will help the local economy.”
 “These projects will ensure we continue to have safe and efficient facilities to assemble, train and store our equipment,” Brig. Gen. Daniel M. Krumrei, the Adjutant General of the Illinois National Guard, said.
A project on the Donnelly Building on Calumet Avenue will include replacing 34,000 square feet of roof including flashing and roof drains. The work will also involve replacing exterior doors and windows, tuckpointing, and interior repairs. L. Marshall, Inc. of Glenview was the lowest of seven bidders for the general construction work at $1,698,000. The asbestos abatement will be done for $98,000 by Colfax Corporation of Chicago, the lower of two bidders. The Donnelly Building is home to approximately 380 soldiers assigned to the headquarters of the 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Company A, 2-20 Special Forces Group, and Company C., 341st Military Intelligence.
The General Jones Armory at 5200 Cottage Gr. in Chicago will receive a new roof and various repairs. Elens and Maichin Roofing and Sheet Metal, Inc. of Joliet was the lowest of five bidders for the general work at $646,700, which will include replacing approximately 24,000 square feet of roofing with new flashing, gutters and roof drains, as well as replacing exterior doors and windows, tuckpointing and interior repairs. The asbestos abatement will be done by Colfax Corporation of Chicago, the lower of two bidders at $129,890.  Approximately 450 soldiers train at the General Jones with Headquarters Company of 1st battalion of the 178th Infantry, Company A of 1st battalion of the 178th Infantry, and Headquarters Battery of 2nd battalion of the 122nd Field Artillery.
            The Midway Airport Army Aviation Support Facility will receive a replacement 44,000-square-foot roof including flashing, gutters and roof drains. The work will also involve replacing exterior doors and windows, tuckpointing, and some interior repairs. A-1 Roofing Co. of Elk Grove Village was the lowest of five bidders at $767,400. The facility houses approximately 180 Soldiers and 11 aircraft of Company B of 1st battalion of the 106th Aviation Regiment and Company B of the 935th Aviation Support Battalion.

The projects will be managed by the Illinois Capital Development Board and all use federal funds administered by the State of Illinois.
