Illinois Department of Human Rights Collaborates on Outreach with Illinois NAACP
CHICAGO – Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) Director Rocco Claps today announced collaborative outreach efforts on statewide human and civil rights issues with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Illinois Conference of Branches.
“IDHR is a neutral body charged with administering and enforcing the Illinois Human Rights Act, while the NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization working toward the eradication of race-based discrimination,” Director Claps said. “Our missions are similar, and we share an interest in seeking a fair and equitable society for all residents of Illinois.”
Claps and NAACP Illinois Conference of Branches President George P. Mitchell announced that IDHR staff will be contacting NAACP branch presidents to discuss partnering on a variety of issues, including protection from employment discrimination, and protection from discrimination in accessing public accommodations and real estate transactions. Partnering will be tailored to local needs, concerns and issues beneficial to mutual constituents.
“We welcome this opportunity to continue the work that is being done in our branches on a daily basis to combat discrimination, and look forward to collaborating with IDHR to further our respective missions and better serve the people of Illinois,” Mitchell said.
