What is the goal of this web site?

The Governor's Sunshine Portal is a one-stop shop for citizens to easily find information about their government. We started with the National Sunshine Week's top 20 categories that serve the public interest. As more state agencies put their information online, you will be able to find it here. You may also wish to review the list of state agencies under the Governor.

Governor Quinn has long been an advocate of transparency in government. Working with the General Assembly, Public Act 096-0225 became effective January 1, 2010, and required the State of Illinois to have the Illinois Transparency and Accountability Portal established within 12 months. The ITAP project was initiated with employee pay and state expenditure data from the agencies that fall under the jurisdiction of the Governor.

The Sunshine portal is an expansion of this initiative and brings even more government information "into the light."

What is Sunshine Week?

Sunshine Week is a national initiative to open a dialogue about the importance of open government and is led by the American Society of News Editors. Visit the Sunshine Week web site to find out more.

What if I'd like to go deeper into the data available through these links?

While all of the information contained on this site is an open record in accordance with Illinois law, there may be additional public records available regarding this data. Additional records can be obtained by making a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the appropriate records custodian(s) in the agency that possesses the documents in accordance with the law.

Also, the Attorney General's office now has a Public Access Counselor as a result of the state's passage of Public ACT 096-0542, which strengthened the Freedom of Information Act and the Open Meetings Act. More information is available at the Attorney General website.
