Governor Quinn Invites Students to Design Crest for USS Illinois!
Governor Quinn is pleased to invite Illinois high school students to participate in the USS Illinois Contest! The Governor is proudly partnering with the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and the USS Illinois Commissioning Committee to announce this competition and provide students from across the state the chance to design the crest of the USS Illinois. The winning submission will adorn Illinois' namesake ship as a symbol of our state, the distinguished crew of this state of the art submarine, and Illinois' thousands of dedicated service members and veterans.
The USS Illinois Commissioning Committee was formed by volunteers from across the state and is being led by the Navy League of the United States - Aurora Council. This Virginia-class submarine is expected to launch in mid-2015 and to be commissioned in early 2016. In Illinois, we value the important contributions of our outstanding service members and veterans and this competition allows students to make history by designing the ship's crest in honor of their dedicated service.
Students from both public and private schools are welcome to participate. Submissions for this historic opportunity are due December 1, 2014. See contest rules (including sample crests), submission form, and Governor Quinn's letter regarding this exciting opportunity below!
