Owners of historic property often have questions about how to do maintenance or make improvements while maintaining authenticity. A wealth of information is available – if you know where to look.
The National Park Service has been at the forefront of helping the public preserve historic properties. Its “Standards for Rehabilitation and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings” are the de facto building code for historic sites.
In addition, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency has produced several publications on special preservation topics, and the IHPA Main Street Design web site has a wealth of information and examples.
