The Process
The Governor's Office of Boards & Commissions has
established a system designed to make the appointment process efficient,
thorough and orderly. At the same time, an effective and precise
process often requires significant time and patience as the Office
assists the Governor with his candidate selections. While we greatly
appreciate your efforts to serve your state, it is important to
understand that for most boards and commissions there are statutorily
mandated guidelines that must be closely adhered to by the Governor.
Most boards have limited memberships, and many have specific qualifications
calling for appointees with particular experience and knowledge.
Please feel free to familiarize yourself with the functions, requirements,
composition, and applicable qualifications for a particular board
by using the listing of boards provided on this website.
How to Apply
If there is a board or commission that interests you, please send us an updated resume and
a letter expressing your interest and indicating the specific board(s)
to which you are applying. Upon notification of your interest, we
will add your name, along with a brief synopsis of your experience,
to our analysis of the specific board(s) of interest. On a regular
basis, the Governor reviews the analyses and makes selections for
appointment and/or reappointment.
Background Check
Please be aware that as part of our routine process,
we will ask that you complete forms that authorize the Illinois
State Police to conduct background, criminal and credit checks.
This is required of all candidates, for all boards, without exception.
Selection
If you are selected by the Governor for appointment,
you will be notified by our office and an official letter of appointment
will be filed with the Office of the Secretary of State.
If you are not selected for a current opening, we
will continue to maintain your file and your name will remain on
the analysis for future consideration when other positions become
available.
Advice and Consent of the Illinois State Senate
Many appointments to specific boards and commissions
require the consent of the State Senate. This is commonly referred
to as the confirmation process. When
necessary, the Senate Executive Appointments Committee conducts
an independent review of the Governor's appointments, prior to confirmation
or non-confirmation of given appointees. On occasion, the Committee
will hold confirmation hearings at which time you may be required
to appear and answer any questions the committee members have for
you. Our office will notify you in advance of such hearings and
furnish you with any pertinent information at that time.
Again, we thank you for your interest in the Governor's
Office of Boards & Commissions. You are welcome to contact us
at any time and we will be glad to assist you and answer any questions
you may have. |
