Illinois is dedicated to the development and use of our extensive coal resources as a fuel source for the 21st century, and offers a number of helpful grant programs to provide partial funding to improve infrastructure and safety, advance cleaner coal technologies, develop new capacities, and further research in the field.

Illinois Coal Competitiveness Program grants provide partial funding towards costs associated with new mine production or expansion and upgrades to infrastructure to improve coal extraction, preparation and transportation systems within Illinois.

Illinois Coal Demonstration Program grants provide partial funding to bring state-of-the-art, advanced coal-use technologies to commercial readiness.

Illinois Coal Research Program grants provide partial funding to research clean coal technology, coal chemistry, mining productivity and coal combustion byproduct utilization.

Illinois Coal Development Program grants seek to advance promising clean coal technologies beyond the research stage towards commercialization. The program provides a 50/50 match with private industry dollars to support market-driven needs of the industry. Development processes include technology maturation, technology transfer and related studies.
